Gaming Inbox: Was Next-Gen a Mistake?

PlayStation 4

Would you be happy to keep playing PlayStation 4 for another five years? (Sony)

The Monday Letters site isn’t surprised that smartphone owners don’t want to pay full price for games, as one reader tries to imagine an Elden Ring movie.

The force of habit
I found myself agreeing with a lot of what was said in the Reader’s Feature about Sony sticking with the PlayStation 4 instead of making the PlayStation 5. Microsoft had an excuse to make the Xbox Series X/S because the Xbox The One had done very poorly, but objectively I’m not sure there’s a good reason for Sony to make the PlayStation 5. It just seemed to happen because that’s what they usually do at that point in their previous console’s life.

No one seems to have explored trying to have longer generations, except, as usual, Nintendo. Which PS4 Pro Ultra idea was better than a PlayStation 5? I don’t know and Sony will never know unless they try. I think they’re just dangerous, but as usual that means you’re ignoring the potential to make things better.

I think we certainly could have benefited from keeping the charts where they were for a generation or two until there was a cost effective way to take advantage of them. Those opportunities are obviously lost now, but I doubt there are more than a few people on PlayStation right now who think the next-gen was a bad idea.

I agree that another Dead Rising remaster is the last thing I want Capcom to waste their time on. But if it’s just a remaster, then hopefully it’s a fairly small project in terms of using their resources.

In fact, I have reasonable hope that a Marvel Vs. Capcom is coming, as even with Sony owning the X-Men license, I think they’d be quite happy to share some of the profit if it means putting out a style of game that they obviously wouldn’t be able to make himself.

What I love about games are the more obscure characters that Capcom throws in for no reason. Yeah, what was Shuma-Gorath doing in Marvel’s Super Heroes?! This is why I really like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, because I have no idea what even half the characters are, but I can just feel the love that went into turning them into fighting game characters.

So yeah, it would be fun to see Squirrel Girl or anyone else from Marvel, but I’m more interested in the Capcom side of things, to see who they suddenly put the spotlight on.

Rise further
It’s a shame that Dead Rising is just a remaster. I’d like a remake with more of the open world elements of 3 and 4, but without the ruthless Christmas of 4. Also, lose the super-infected; they upset my trap.

Maybe if the remaster does well, Capcom can make a new entry with the current intelligent AI. For me, the best part of Dead Rising was having eight characters with AR-15s completely flushing out every boss you fought. We hope it stays inside.

Terrible bosses
RE: Stellar Blade. I really enjoyed it and it was my game of the year, but the boss battles are a nightmare. I’m usually one to analyze them if need be, but Unidentified Naytiba just beat me to it and I went into story mode. I feel dirty doing this, but I’m just fed up of spending ages chipping away at his health only to have him throw fireballs at me and me dying.

This is why I’m not picking up the Elden Ring DLC - I just can’t be bothered to die over and over again to annoying bosses at the moment.

Ancient origin
You know how sometimes you just quote catchphrases and whatnot from before, but my wife and I still say ‘OL Yade’ and ‘I’m holding out for you’ on a regular basis, usually when we hand each other random things .

We just realized, thanks to your review, that we’ve been saying this for over 20 years, as I bought the original Beyond Good & Evil on the strength of your original review!

I feel dead old now but glad to hear the game is still going.

It seems very true and real considering what Shigeru Miyamoto said about Nintendo’s ethos. Faced with massively changing trends in audience spending on end product, it’s not hard to see that even corporate sheeple can put in the hard work and dedication to achieve benchmarking and competition with the company’s ethos. other ‘faster and more fashionable’. who try to find the lightning in the bottle formula to keep up with the others. When I talk about others, I’m talking about faceless money people. We know the big brands.

I am in no way able to guess what they are doing. I just hope they make Satoru Iwata’s memory triple Mario jump on every success. I would have been a happy man if I had invested heavily in the year 2000.

It’s been a great time to be a gamer and I’m very excited for the future as long as the passion remains.

Mediocrity in the middle of the table
I would argue that Black Flag is nowhere near being the best of the series, classic or otherwise. I’d say Assassin’s Creed 2 was easily the best of the old school ones, with the best setting and characters, and simple but enjoyable stealth and action.

I actually have a pretty soft spot for Unity, but I think the more modern RPGs are the best, and that they’ve all been good so far. For me the Mirage was a disappointing step back.

Black Flag is strictly mid table fodder as far as I’m concerned. The pirate angle is good in theory, but I find the story to be pretty clunky and the ship combat is fun but kind of dumb in terms of any kind of realism.

The dream scenario
I love the guy’s optimism for a Dreamcast 2 in Reader’s Feature at the weekend. It’s obviously not going to happen, and I think he knows that, but it’s a cool idea. I think in a few years, when the broadcast is more direct, things like this can happen.

The idea of every publisher having their own subscription service like EA Play and Ubisoft+ seems to have cooled in recent years, I guess because they realize that everyone is sick of subscriptions at this point, but they love nothing more than sell all their games. fair fans, without any other obstacles.

Selling digitally can cut the money given to stores, but you have to pay Microsoft or Sony a percentage, on top of a licensing fee, so that all goes out the window if the Dreamcast 2, to use the example in question, came out. and you were only paying for it and its games directly to Sega.

Now, no one wants a keyboard – virtual or otherwise – for every publisher, but there’s plenty of incentive for companies. They might be pushed because that style of doing things hasn’t really worked on TV, but it has worked for Disney+ and a few others.

Does this mean I think we might get an actual Dreamcast 2 in the near future? No. But in the distant future? Maybe I could see it, although at that point who could guess which games would be running?

I love how nine Assassin’s Creed games in development sounds like a wild exaggeration at first and then you look into it and it turns out it might actually be an understatement.

If Bend is working on a live service game, why couldn’t they have made it a Days Gone game? It’s not that people don’t like zombies, even if they haven’t played the original game.
